Un Friedliche Industrie (“A Peaceful Industry”), consists of two parts: 1) a Period Room of my Oma’s (Grandmother) home in Karlsruhe, Germany before her citizenship was revoked with the Nuremberg laws, made entirely of cardboard and papier-mache- visualising secular Jewish life in Germany, and, 2) The Gift Shop, filled with souvenirs that distort, package, and commodify the history presented in the Period Room. The souvenirs in The Gift Shop will all be available for purchase, thus completing the cycle of the production and consumption of history and asking the question whether we need humor, kitsch and distortment in order to arrive at authentic interpretations of history.
