Souvenirs
"Souvenirs" imagines the present state of the Jewish diaspora and state of Israel from the vantage point of the future through a series of “fossilized souvenirs”. Each object encapsulates a specific period within the history [and reflects the consequence] of political zionism and/or American-Jewish pop culture.
The series features places of memory such as Masada, Al-Quds/Jerusalem, Holocaust memorials in Miami and Berlin, politicians including Theodor Herzl, Bibi Netanyahu, Miri Regev, Sheldon Adelson and political signifiers like the Yizkor (remembrance) Candle, flag pins and the "Visit Palestine" poster made in 1936 for the Tourist Development Association of Palestine by Franz Krausz, an Austrian Jewish immigrant to Palestine in the 1930s who fled Germany before the Holocaust.
The original pieces were made out of sculpey clay. I then created a silicone mold of each design to cast in concrete and chocolate. A chocolate iteration was exhibited and consumed at my opening in Green Kill Gallery in 2018 in Kingston NY. The concrete installation shown in Watch it Burn at Trestle Art Space in 2018 *Brooklyn NY, curated by Carmen Hermo. Concrete magnets were also sold as souvenirs at Eine Friedliche Industrie, my installation at Spring/Break Art fair. I am continuing to experiment with these works.
