Sculpture > Furnished

El Dorado was made for FURNISHED, curated by Zack Spechler for Miami Art Week 2021, and featuring artists Sleeper, MILAGROS collective, Raul Santos, FLMINGO, Christopher Ian Macfarlane and Luis Pinto.

The installation explores sea and ship as places of desperation, rootlessness and possibility. The boat was made from recycled paper, cardboard and salvaged furniture from El Dorado Furniture. Using the El Dorado family’s migration story as the catalyst for the space, the sculptures inside the boat are inspired by archives, news clippings and oral histories of Jewish migrants who traveled to the Port of Miami and Port of Havanna. Contrasting El Dorado’s story of success, albeit struggle, with the stories of immigrants who were refused entry.
